01Rules first

A public lake with specific limits.

The Town's current Monument Lake rules are more restrictive than a generic “park lake” description suggests.

Lake operating hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Swimming and wading are prohibited. Camping and campfires are prohibited, pets must remain leashed and under control, and fishing from the dam structure or closed areas is not allowed.

The Town currently does not accept reservations for Monument Lake. For-profit commercial activity is possible only through a Lake Use Permit. Those two rules are easy to miss when relying on older third-party listings.

02Fishing

Fishing is allowed. The license rules still apply.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations apply in addition to Town lake rules.

License

The Town ordinance requires anyone age 16 or older to hold a valid fishing license when fishing Monument Lake.

Fish listed by the Town

The Town FAQ identifies rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, cutbow trout, catfish, perch, bluegill, pike and smallmouth bass, with possible largemouth bass. Stocking and statewide fishing rules can change, so anglers should check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife information before relying on an old species or limit list.

Lake size and level

When full, the Town describes Monument Lake as roughly 30.7 surface acres and 304.8 acre-feet. The Water Department monitors lake depth daily; normal day-to-day changes are small, although dry years can produce larger seasonal changes.

03Boating and water use

Paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing are welcome.

Monument Lake permits public paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing. Fishing is also allowed with the required Colorado license. Follow posted launch and safety rules. Electric trolling motors are permitted; other motor types are not.

Swimming and wading are not permitted. That includes treating the shoreline like a beach or using the lake as a general swimming area.

Commercial instruction, rentals, events or other for-profit activity require the Town's Lake Use Permit rather than informal use of the property.

Wildlife & the lake

Fishing and shoreline activity change with the seasons.

Monument Lake is a public resource rather than a private recreation amenity. The Town sets local lake-use rules, while Colorado Parks and Wildlife publishes state fishing license requirements and regulations.

Check the Town's Monument Lake page and current state guidance before planning a visit. Posted rules take precedence over older travel articles or photographs.

04Living nearby

The lake is part of Monument's setting, not a private amenity.

Properties near Monument Lake range from older in-town homes to neighborhoods west and south of the lake. One attached-home example is Bel Lago Villas / Meadows at Monument Lake; association obligations and actual lake-access rights need to be verified for each address. Views, road access, lot size and proximity to public recreation can differ substantially even within a short distance.
